History of the Lawrence Library
The Library was a gift to the Town of Pepperell by Charles Farrar Lawrence who bequeathed $100,000 for its construction. The work was completed in 1901. Mr. Lawrence's book collection resides in the Art Gallery. The Library is also home to Sidney Shattuck's (1876-1917) personal collection of 110 local birds, all carefully mounted and labeled and on permanent display in the Reading Room. The oiginal section of the Library is also featured in illustrations of former resident Barbara Cooney's book, Miss Rumphius.
Friends of the Lawrence Library
The Friends was formed in 1965 as a non-profit organization to foster closer relations between the Library and the community; to promote awareness of the Library's services and programs; and raise funds for Library purchases. The Friends meet at the Library on the second Thursday of each month, September-June, at 9:30 a.m. Free, on-site babysitting is available during the meetings. Newcomers are always welcome!
The Friends of the Lawrence Library is one of the largest Friends organizations in the area. Last year we raised over $17,000, of which $3,000 was from membership alone. We always need volunteers at Friends sponsored events, so if you can't attend meetings, but would like to help, we'd be glad to call you as needed! Or be a member in name only-we won't call you unless you ask to be called.
